WHAT ABOUT RED WINE?

New York - Resveratrol, a substance contained in red wine has ultimately no beneficial qualities for middle-aged women, according to a U.S. study published in the Cell Metabolism Journal.

Resveratrol has previously been associated with lower cardiovascular risk, life expectancy increase, metabolism improvement and diabetes prevention. There have also been reports of tumor action.

However, the research team at the Medical School of Washington University in St. Louis led by Dr. Samuel Klein, director of the Center for Human Nutrition, disputes the benefits of resveratrol on human health.

The researchers studied over 12 weeks, 29 healthy postmenopausal women. Half received resveratrol supplement and half inactive formulation (placebo).

Specifically, the intervention group received 75mg of resveratrol daily, a quantity equivalent to the consumption of eight liters of red wine.

The researchers recorded the response rate of the body to insulin and glucose absorption from muscle to determine the effect of resveratrol on metabolism of women.

Unfortunately there were no metabolic improvement in the intervention group compared with the control group.

Furthermore, the scientists collected samples of muscle and fat from the women who were supplemented with resveratrol, again without identifying beneficial effects on cellular metabolism.

"Dietary supplements containing resveratrol tend to become more and more popular, thanks to its many benefits for the body. So far though few studies have examined its effect in healthy individuals, as most studies have been done in people who have diabetes or metabolic disorders, "says Dr. Klein.

The researcher notes that although the new study does not confirm the benefits of resveratrol in healthy women, should not be ruled out to be beneficial for people with metabolic disorders.

Dr. Klein answering the question how to deliver the benefits for lovers of red wine, argues that "red wine contains other substances in addition to resveratrol, and shall not be excluded the positive synergy effect of all substances contained in red wine".
